An Ottawa Vintage Inspired Wedding

If you have been dreaming about a whimsical vintage-inspired wedding in Ottawa that feels almost nostalgic mixed with a fairy wonderland theme, wait until you see the styled shoot at Carswell House.

Themed weddings are so back! They aren't overly themed like weddings used to lean back in the early 2010s, but they tend to have an overarching theme that is felt subtly in the dress, decor, and overall vibe. We'll use the term "modern vintage", which yes, is an oxymoron,  but stick with us here. Modern vintage is about intimate weddings that include well thought out details like delicate lace, heirloom inspired accessories, and venues with real character.

The Carswell house is a private heritage grand five acre estate just outside Ottawa.
"Built in the nineteenth century, the house reflects the scale, craftsmanship, and quiet dignity of the period in which it was constructed. Over time it became a local landmark, known not only for its architecture but for the enduring character of the property itself." The stewards often allow limited photography that can be used for Ottawa bridal and engagement portrait sessions.

When Ottawa wedding photographer Tamara, @tamaraphotographs, reached out to show us her mood board for this vintage nostalgic shoot, our immediate reaction was to include the hazel gown. Hazel by Ouma Atelier is a statement dress for sure. She is currently an exclusive gown to Always Knew I Needed in Ottawa. An a-line dress  made of luxurious mikado featuring a peak-a-boo twisted bodice, optional ruffled sleeves, and a gathered skirt with a ruffled edge. When we talk about "modern vintage" this is exactly what we are talking about. The high waistline and subtle leg slit make this one of a kind unique wedding dress the vintage inspired wedding gown of your dreams.
This styling felt editorial without losing warmth. It had a deeply romantic feel that comes through in the photographs without feeling particularly traditional.

Modern vintage is about keeping the basic simple, but pushing it over the edge with details. The magic of nostalgic wedding design is always in details. The florals by Nectar Florals brought colour and dimension to the overall look. The burgundy and white wedding bouquet helped this Otttawa wedding feel organic.
Vintage-inspired weddings will never really go out of style. They are rooted in emotion, atmosphere and storytelling. These are what you will actually remember many years after your wedding day.
If you're looking for a wedding dress that feels timeless, but still fashion forward, Always Knew I Needed specializes in luxury Canadian bridal designers, inclusive sizing, and private appointments for brides who want a calm, elevated experience while finding their gown.
